As a first-time published author, you may not have the luxury of having your first book signing in a book store. If your book is not for sale in a store, chances are you will not be able to have your signing there. You have to think outside the box and outside of the book store. Consider my top five below:
Top Five Picks
- The local library is at the top of my list. It’s perfect because it has the look and feel of a bookstore. Most libraries have programs in place to support their local authors. And the most important thing is, it’s free! Check them out. I have one scheduled for later in the month.
- A Neighborhood or Apartment Club House was designed for hosting events. If you or someone you know live in a community with one, secure it. Residents are allowed to use them and often with minimal or no fee. I once hosted a book club meeting at one. It was awesome!
- The Church is another option. Most will allow their members to host events. Some Mega Churches even have a book fair day to support their members who are authors. Both are usually without fee to the author.
- The Mall is worth looking into. I am in the process of securing a date.
- A paid venue like a hotel or event space works if you have the budget for it. Call around to compare prices. I recently secured a small boardroom at a brand-new hotel. It’s small, but very nice. It will work perfectly for what I have in mind. I booked the room for $75 dollars for 4 hours.
When you’re ready for your book signing have an open mind. You can have it in a restaurant, a coffeeshop, or wherever you want it to be. Remember, people are coming to meet you not the book, so pick a cool spot and enjoy it.
